SLIGHT HICCUP: HIP FRACTURE

Unfortunately, I began my junior of college with a running injury that led to hip surgery, Complications from that surgery left me less productive than I would have liked, but once I was recovered I was ready to jump back into my academics and my communities!

BIO 446 - PLANT IDENTIFICATION AND CLASSIFICATION

GENOME 565 - HUMAN GENETICS

After being accepted into my major, I was finally eligible for upper division electives. For our first assignment, we were given pedigrees, clinical vignettes, and whole exome data for four families. From the exome data we were to find 10 or so genes that could be potential candidates for disease, and then use the USCS genome browser to confirm the clinical manifestations. This assignment was difficult and rewarding because not only did I do well, but the data we were given was from real families. This was the moment that I felt that my contribution to STEM was real and tangible and not just textbook learning.

This was one of my favorite upper division biology classes because of how practical it was. We focused on identifying plant families native to the Pacific Northwest, and soon I started to recognize them everywhere. It made hiking and even walking around campus more interesting! This assignment had us identify the plant families that are part of common household items. The biggest takeaway from this class (aside from our extremely difficult ID final with 30 seconds per species) was that there are more plants around us than we usually acknowledge.

STRÖMBERG LABORATORY

Continuing my interest in botany, I began working in the Strömberg Laboratory under now Dr. Paige Wilson! We were examining climate estimates across the Cretaceous - PaleoGene boundary, around the time of the mass extinction of non-avian dinosaurs. I was responsible for photographing and processing leaf fossils in the Burke Museum. it was incredibly rewarding to inside the paleontology labs in the museum, as working alongside a student finishing their dissertation because thats something I am considering doing (at some point).

GLOBEMED COMMUNITY BUILDING

 GlobeMed is an RSO that I joined junior year after frustration with the pandemic and my own health issues - they  mobilize a community of students and grassroots leaders to improve global health through fundraising and education. Our chapter is partnered with MASS in Odisha, India. We have partnered with several RSO's on campus to do local mutual aid as like UW Food Pantry, UW Farm, and Roots, aswell as more international fundraising. After joining the club I decided to run for the executive board, and now I am personally responsible fo recruitment and community building. GlobeMed is an international organization, and this is a screenshot from our meeting with the University of Rwanda where we discussed nutrition disparities between Rwanda and the US.

HONORS COMMUNITY AMBASSADOR

I was feeling disconnected from the Honors Program with online classes, so I became an Honors Community Ambassador and started running the Honors Instagram. I focused on creating interactive content for incoming freshman students.

LING 532 - SOCIOLINGUISTICS

Sociolinguistics was an incredibly interesting class to study, especially after having moved across the country for college and encountering several different American dialects and accents  at our huge school. I did my final research project on the uniquely Pacific Northwest pronunciation of the word "bag," and after interviewing my friends who are native to Washington and some of their parents, concluded that younger kids are less likely to use the regional pronunciation.
